Create your own Viking Age kirtle, tunic, or dress with this beginner-friendly sewing pattern.
The pattern is based on Inga Hägg’s interpretation of the basic Birka kirtle/tunic and includes sewing instructions for both historical hand sewing and modern machine sewing.
The pattern comes in full scale and is designed to be simple and accessible, making it suitable even for beginners.
 
Fabric recommendations
Linen or wool.
For wool garments, both lightweight wool and heavier fulled or felted wool can be used. Linen garments were commonly worn as undergarments, with wool garments layered on top.
 
Fabric required
Approximately 2.5–3.5 metres, depending on your size and the width of the fabric.
